Woke up early this morning to head over to the Verizon Wireless Store to checkout the new Motorola Droid. It took all of about 2 minutes playing around with the demo to decide that I HAD to have this phone. First off, I've recently registered as an Adroid Application developer and needed something to test my applications on. Second... and most important... THIS IS JUST A BADASS PHONE!!!! I don't usually make immediate purchases... but this one was a no-brainer. Verizon was offering a $100 rebate by mail, so in all the total price of the phone came to $199 plus tax. There was a small issue when they transferred over my contact list from my old Samsung Omnia and apparently I ended up with someone else's contacts in my phone. No harm, no foul... mistakes happen. I had barely stepped out of the store when I made the realization, so back in I went. it took a little while for the techs to figure out what was happening and the conclusion was that there was something incompatible on my Omnia that was preventing a clean transfer of contact info over to the Droid.
After returning home, I began to play with the phone and am STILL amazed at how incredibly FAST it is. The response time alone makes this the best mobile device I've ever used. But its not just response time... in fact, as I write this, I'm concurrently downloading and installing about 20 applications from the Android Market and STILL I am able to use the device while those items are downloading. NO, I repeat NO slow-down at all. The screen is bright and wide and is incredibly accurate when reading the touch locations. You have the option to use a touch-screen keyboard or the full keyboard by siding open the phone. I would say the phone is only slightly (negligible) thicker than the iPhone.
It has a 5MP camera with video. The GPS is top-notch. I located my position within about 20 meters and the signal at our house isn't even the greatest. I could obviously go on and on about this phone's features but what is REALLY impressive are the small things. For example, my beautiful bride just called and the sound quality is the best I've ever experienced. As we said goodbye, i could hear her disconnect and INSTANTLY the touchscreen reacted and showed me the options panel to hangup, etc. Instead of a stack of books, wires and cables, the Droid comes with a small getting started foldout, and the usb cable snaps into the side of the A/C plug for charging. It is my opinion that the Droid will QUICKLY ecome the de facto standard by which ALL other phones and mobile devices are judged. No offense intended to all the iPhone fans.
