Windows 7 in Action - My Music, My Documents gone without reason

21. January 2010 11:36

So I logged in yesterday morning after having gone to bed relatively early (around midnight) the night before after running Windows Update to find that mysteriously, without cause or warning, several HUNDRED GB of data were "missing" from my brand new Windows 7 64-bit filesystem.  At first, it was strange but not really dramatic since it seemed to be just notes, and files from my My Documents folder.  Then I realized that ALL of my 100+GB of music has vanished from the My Music folder.  DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG THAT TAKES TO RE-COPY?!?!  Luckily, all of my documents that had any value were password protected... I think. At least I have backups of everything, and I rarely store anything on the system drive. Instead, i prefer to store anything of consequence on a different drive.

My first thought was that I had been hacked, had a virus, or a worm and that someone had stolen those files.  Nope.  After running scores of virus scans, HijackThis, spyware scanners and digging through log after log, I found no evidence of any such activity.  I mentioned the occurrence to my friend Rick, who propmtly informed me that the same thing had happened to him and that he was forced to perform a complete shut-down, and reboot.

Fingers crossed, I performed the shut-down.  Maybe at some predefined date in the future, my data will just magically reappear... but to date... no such luck.  All gone.  All I can say is that was an awesome Windows Update. I researched this occurrence on google, but so far, there are no results.
